I figured I would throw some fun photography facts your way today. Why? Because I can, and, well this IS a photography blog. Now many of these facts have been collected over the Internet, and of course, if it’s on the Internet, it MUST be true…If you have no idea what I’m referencing, you probably don’t watch much TV. So here is the State Farm commercial that I was referencing:

- The Brownie is a popular series of simple and inexpensive cameras made by Eastman Kodak. It was first introduced in February, 1900,and was a very basic cardboard box camera with a simple lens that took 2¼-inch square pictures on 117 rollfilm and cost…one dollar.
(Source: Wikipedia) - He had better have a big house! Dilish Parekh of Mumbai has a collection of 4,425 antique cameras that he has collected since 1977. His oldest dates back to 1907. I’m proud to say I have an older camera! I have an old Kodak from 1905. Want to see it? There’s one just like it on display at the Henry Ford Museum.

(source: Wikipedia) - The total number of photos on Facebook is 10,000 times more than the total number of photos in the U.S. Library of Congress, which document U.S. history since the beginning of time. (Crazy, right?)

(source: Huffington Post) - A rare 1923 Leica went for 2.16 million euros ($2.8 million) at an auction in Vienna at the weekend, making it the most expensive camera ever sold, the auctioneer said.
(Source: Reuters) - It’s estimates that on a whole, humans have taken over 3.8 TRILLION photos. Wow. To put it in perspective, the national debt today is 16.7 trillion.
(Source: Buzzfeed) - James Clerk Maxwell, a Scottish physicist, created the first color photograph in 1861. He photographed a tartan ribbon three times, using a red, blue and yellow filter, and combined the three images into the final color composite.
(source: National Geographic) - The longest photographic negative measures just over 129 ft in length and was created by Esteban Pastorino Diaz using a custom-built panoramic slit camera on June 13, 2010. He captured this negative on the major streets in Buenos Aries while keeping the camera mounted to the roof of a car. Take that Google Streets!

- One of the first recorded patents for a panoramic camera was submitted by Joseph Puchberger in Austria in 1843 for a hand-cranked, 150° field of view, 8-inch focal length camera.
(Source: Wikipedia) - If you’re doing the Internet dating thing, here’s a tip for you: In terms of getting new messages, the MySpace shot (When the camera is placed above your head at an angle to take a myspace
picture) is the single most effective photo type for women. Men’s photos are most effective when they look away from the camera and don’t smile.
(Source: OkCupid) - Remember back ten years ago when we thought our 4 megapixel (MP) cameras were AMAZING? Well, technology moves pretty fast. My Canon 5d MKIII is a whopping 22.3 MP, but if you really want to go all out, you can purchase a Mamiya 645DF for the low, low price of $34,000. Yikes! I think I’ll be sticking with my 5d MKIII for the time being. The Mamiya 645DF is one of the largest MP cameras on the market today.
- Which side of your face do you consider to be your best? A study by Kelsey Blackburn and James Schirillo from Wake Forest University determined that the left side of your face are perceived and rated as more pleasant than pictures of the right side of the face, possibly due to the fact that we present a greater intensity of emotion on the left side of our face.
(Source: Science Daily) - Eastman Kodak has been around since 1880 and had been industry leaders in the imaging arena for most of the time since then. The filed for bankruptcy protection in 2012. How could this happen you ask? Well first off, they were super slow to make the transition from film to digital, which gave their competitors time to gain the majority of the market. Thee other part of their business, photographic paper and equipment has been overtaken by consumer grade photo printers.

(Source: Buzzfeed) - The largest photography competition entrant is Vereniging Wikimedia Nederland of the Netherlands, who entered 168,208 images in the Wiki Loves Monuments 2011 competition, spanning from July 1st to September 31st in 2011. I think it’s safe to say they have WAY too much time on their hands…and they REALLY wanted the odds to be in their favor!

(Source: 1000memories) - In 2012, 37% of the images in the US were captured using camera phones, but by 2015, that number is expected to be 50%.
